Big Day Out 2015
The Forestry Industry Big Day Out saw students from all four Gisborne high schools, Tolaga Bay Area School, Wairoa College and Ngata Memorial College journey in groups to forestry sites in the region for a crash course in forestry.
The students were introduced to forestry procedures, including harvest planning, payload analysis and geographic information systems. The aim of the Careers New Zealand initiative was to expose career opportunities within regional industries, and help teachers and students see what jobs are available.
It was the third instalment of the Industry Big Day Out. Last year the focus was on engineering and horticulture in the district. Careers NZ careers development leader Kim Holland said the day was “very successful”.
“Feedback from all parties was very positive. It was a great opportunity for the students to be exposed to the forestry industry and to talk to various training providers.”
